Visiting the Maldives

Visiting the Maldives is not complicated because of their visa policy. All visitors meeting the requirements will receive a free visa upon arrival, which is good for 30 days. The requirements are valid travel documents, a return ticket, as well as proof of sufficient funds for the stay. This last one can be met by either showing proof of a reservation at a resort or by having $750 in cash.

Getting to the Maldives is practically limited to planes. This is for three reasons: one, there are no regular passenger boats; two, the reefs surrounded the islands are hard to navigate; and three, permits are expensive. Most visitors arrive at the Malé International Airport, which is not located in the capital as the name suggests, but on the neighboring island of Hulhulé. You should plan on the flight lasting somewhere between 16 and 17 hours. It will also probably include a transfer in Singapore.

Once you arrive, you can split your time between relaxing on the beach and scuba diving, which is the leading activity of the islands. The Maldives is the perfect setting for snorkeling since the water is clear and there are amazing sights underwater. While the Powderblue Surgeonfish is one of the most common fish you will see, you can also expect more exciting finds like sharks, manta rays, and even a couple sunken ships. If you are visiting the islands mainly for diving, be sure to come from January to April when the sea is calmest and most clear.
